After over a long stretch off the radar, Soundgarden--guitarist Kim Thayil, vocalist/guitarist Chris Cornell, bassist Matt Shepherd, and drummer Matt Cameron--resurfaced in 2010 with a retrospective CD, Telephantasm. Select live gigs followed over the ensuing year, including a surprise gig at the Showbox in Seattle and an epic set at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington. They released their first live album, Live on I-5, in 2011. Then they contributed a new cut, "Live to Rise," to the soundtrack of the summer blockbuster, The Avengers. The catalyst for this salvo of forthcoming live dates, though, is King Animal, Soundgarden's latest long-player. The album just dropped on Tuesday, and it showcases the band's loud, bigger-than-life sound firing on all eight cylinders.
